What is ISO 14298 standard?

ISO 14298:2013 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an organization’s security management system, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Due to the nature of the subject the public ISO 14298 Standard is not very detailed on the specific measures companies need to take in order to secure their production processes. Besides the official and publicly available standard document, Intergraf provides confidential Implementation Guidelines and Intergraf Certification Requirements (ICR), exclusively developed for the security printing industry and the specific needs of this market. Those requirements are confidential and are not publicly available as access to these documents needs to be limited to security printers.

he Intergraf Certification Requirements (ICR) are a confidential document owned by Intergraf. Companies wishing to be certified according to Intergraf’s scheme for ISO 14298:2013 use this document to fulfill the requirements for the certification. Only if these requirements are fulfilled a company can ensure a high level of security and can become a certified “Security Printer” according to ISO 14298:2013. Version number 01:2019 of these Certification requirements contains 14 chapters, 100 items and 80 pages. The Intergraf Certification Requirements (ICR) foresee 3 levels of certification based on the level of security and the products produced. These requirements are exclusively available after a successful screening by Intergraf and they are strictly confidential.

Principles of ISO 14298 standard

ISO 14298 defines how to manage security in printing through structured and controlled processes. The standard is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) methodology, promoting continual improvement to effectively manage and reduce risks related to the misuse, forgery, or theft of secure printed materials.

The key phases include:

1. Plan: Establish security objectives and policies, assess risks, and determine controls required to protect printed products and processes.

2. Do: Implement the security measures and procedures defined during the planning stage.

3. Check: Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of implemented controls and security performance.

4. Act: Make improvements based on internal audits, monitoring results, or incident analysis.

Benefit

Benefits of ISO 14298 standard

ISO 14298 follows a management system structure aligned with Annex SL, ensuring easier integration with other ISO standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 27001). This enables organisations to adopt multiple certifications in a unified and efficient way.
